Safety concerns stop Air Pacific's Christmas island flights

1:12 pm on 1 September 2008

Air Pacific is suspending its flights to Christmas Island until the Kiribati government repairs the runway.

The Pacnews agency reports that Air Pacific is taking action because it feels the deteriorating runway may compromise passenger safety.

Air Pacific's CEO, John Campbell, says Air Pacific operations personnel and experts from New Zealand had inspected the runway before the decision was made.

He says the airline will maintain close communication with the Kiribati government on progress over the resurfacing and is willing to provide support.
