Samoa court case against police corporal collapses

1:11 pm on 26 August 2008

The Supreme Court in Samoa has dismissed one count of attempted rape against a suspended police corporal, Fa'apa'ia Agafili, because state lawyers have told the court police have no evidence.

The other two criminal charges of common assault and indecent assault against the officer were withdrawn when the prosecution told the court the victim who is the key witness had not turned up at the trial.

The police corporal was charged in 2006 when the alleged female victim claimed she was assaulted while being kept in police custody as part of a separate inquiry.
