NZ PM says Fiji key item on Niue Forum agenda

3:17 pm on 12 August 2008

The New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark says finding a way for Fiji to return to democracy will be a key element of next week's Pacific Islands Forum summit in Niue.

She says recent statements by Fiji's interim leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, that his government had no intention of keeping to an agreed deadline of elections by March next year was of great concern.

Miss Clark says last month's meeting of Pacific foreign ministers found it was only a lack of political will that was standing in the way of the poll.

Labour mobility, the Pacific Plan on regional integration and the bulk purchasing of fuel are also on the agenda.

Miss Clark says because of the significance of remittances to many island countries, the leaders want to try and reduce the cost of sending money home.

And Miss Clark says the Forum also allows Niue an opportunity to highlight its challenges and opportunities.
