3:42 pm on 30 July 2008

The traditional kava ceremony to install the King Tonga is complete.

King George Tupou V was officially anointed in a two and a half hour ceremony in Nuku'alofa.

Richard Pamatatau reports:

"King George Tupou V wearing white, a fine mat and a garland of flowers was greeted by cheers and clapping. As is tradition, his subjects remain seated for the duration without hats or sunglasses under mostly blue skies. While the ceremony was sombre, the sound of saws and hammering often intruded and many people were sending and receiving text messages."
