American Samoa governor lifts hiring freeze

The American Samoan Governor, Togiola Tulafono, has lifted the freeze on hiring and promotions as well as a pay freeze which he imposed two months ago.

The freeze was ordered after the second 50 cent increase in the local minimum wage went into effect in May.

The governor said his administration needed to assess the impact of the wage increase on government operations.

Last month, Togiola announced that a review by the departments of Human Resources, Budget and Treasury showed that the wage increase could be absorbed within the existing budgets.

In lifting the freeze, the governor thanked all departments for reviewing personnel rosters and making preparations for the latest mandated wage hike.
