Samoa's newly privatised TV station to double local output

9:55 am on 24 July 2008

The first priority of the private company that bought Samoa's government television station for 800-thousand US dollars is to double the number of local programmes.

Samoa Quality Broadcasting's managing director Galumalemana Faiesea Lei Sam-Matafeo told the Samoa Observer, at present local content is 15%.

She said it was cheaper to import programs from overseas than produce local programs but her aim is to make the content relevant for viewers.

This also fits in with SQB's aim to focus on Samoan language and culture.

News and sports will be flag ship programmes.

The Samoa Government has signed over the ownership of the TV station to QBC, that has been re-named TV One.

The am radio station remains under government control.
