Delay in new cannery project for Federated States of Micronesia

An American company has delayed plans to build an $80 million cannery in the Federated States of Micronesia while it monitors the progress of smaller projects.

It has been nearly a year since the company, Oceania, first announced plans to construct a cannery in Pohnpei which would employ about 2,000 people.

Fredrick Ramp, attorney for Oceania, says most of the investment capital required for the project has been raised and project plans are nearing completion.

Pohnpei's Governor announced in May, following a trip to China, that Beijing had agreed to provide a grant to build a fish processing facility in Pohnpei.

Meanwhile, the government has filed suit against the company challenging the legality of a contract between Oceania and Pohnpei's Economic Development Authority to manage all of the authority's port functions.
