French Polynesian radio faces partial cut over unpaid debts

French Polynesia's Radio Maohi has been shut down in the west of Tahiti because of debts to the TDF company which provides radio and television transmission services.

The radio has been linked to the Tahoeraa Huiraatira party which had been the dominant political force in Pirae, west of Papeete until the municipal election in March.

Pirae now has a mayor of the ruling To Tatou Aia coalition which, according to the news agency Tahitipresse, has prompted a Tahoeraa politician to say the new mayor is pursuing a policy of muzzling the opposition.

Radio Maohi continues to broadcast in other parts of Tahiti where it owns the transmission equipment.
