Solomon Islands MPs continue to mis-use rural constituency funds - commentator

A former Solomon Islands government secretary and advisor to the Development Trust, Dr John Roughan, says the Rural Constituency Development Fund is being misused by politicians.

The Fund was introduced by a former leader, Solomon Mamaloni, to support people in rural areas with business activities.

But according to the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Dr Roughan claims the fund is now being used to campaign for the 2010 elections.

He says it's common knowledge that the Fund has been used by politicians for things such as school fees and even to buy coffins.

Dr Roughan says this amounts to political point scoring.

He says while there has been an increase of funding for rural areas, some say there has been no tangible economic development.
