American Samoa Governor promises action on rising food prices

9:30 am on 10 June 2008

American Samoa governor, Togiola Tulafono, plans to appoint a task force to look into the increase in prices of goods, especially rice, after reports that rice prices have increased in the last couple of weeks.

Togiola made the announcement on his radio programme, in response to a caller, who complained about the continued rise in the prices of goods sold in the territory.

The Governor says the task force will conduct a review of the price of rice and other goods to find out "if there is unfair business practice" in the private sector driving up prices.

He says the government will use current existing laws to make a case to be taken to court.
