Melanesian Spearhead Group to help Fiji hold elections next year

The Melanesian Spearhead Group is to support Fiji efforts to honour its commitment to hold free and fair elections by March next year.

Fiji's interim Foreign Minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has briefed his MSG counterparts on the progress his country is making towards returning to democracy at the MSG summit in Port Vila.

After hosting the meeting, Vanuatu's Foreign Minister George Wells describes Ratu Epeli's presentation as excellent.

Mr Wells says the Ministers assured Ratu Epeli of the MSG's support towards meeting the timetable and that they expect to be notified if something disturbs Fiji's progress.

"We still maintain the timetable and encourage Fiji to comply with the timetable. And also if there is any suggestion that Fiji could not meet this timetable, Fiji is asked to let the embassy members know earlier instead of waiting until the end of the mandate."
