The French Polynesian assembly has again failed to approve a 680 million US dollar development contract due to be signed by President Gaston Tong Sang in Paris this week.
Mr Tong Sang has flown to France to meet the prime minister, Francois Fillon, and President Nicoals Sarkozy who is due to sign the deal on Thursday.

"It has not been going to plan for the French Polynesian government as there has been a fresh delay in the assembly in Papeete where the opposition wants slight amendments to be deliberated in a committee. The acting assembly president, who is an opposition politician, has now adjourned the sitting until Friday. This has led to government demands that the sitting be brought forward again, but the opposition says ignoring the four-day committee discussion would make the process illegal. The latest moves have raised the possibility that the projects might be signed off in Paris before the French Polynesian assembly has given its approval."
