The French Polynesian assembly is now expected to meet next week to pass a development project while President Gaston Tong Sang is already in Paris.
The opposition, which had been boycotting the assembly for the past two weeks, called for the vote to be deferred until Monday invoking assembly rules that require government projects to be voted on after a four day wait.
The government had accused the opposition of trying to thwart the assembly's workings as it hoped to adopt the project before Mr Tong Sang's departure tonight for France where he plans to sign the agreeement with the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy.
The opposition leader, Gaston Flosse, had warned of legal action and said he would write to Mr Sarkozy, asking him not to sign the document.
The government is now expected to wait until next week to vote on the plan after the mandated four-day delay.
Last week, the assembly didn't meet because the assembly president, Oscar Temaru, who is an opposition politician, didn't open the sitting as he noted that the government side was one member short of forming a quorum.
