Australia has asked permission from Fiji for Australian police to join the Australian High Commission in Suva to boost security after a
second death threat.
The mission had already received a threat last week which Australia said appeared to be politically motivated, and made by a person or group unhappy with Australia's policy on Fiji.
The Australian foreign minister, Stephen Smith, says he has sent a formal note to the Fiji interim foreign minister seeking urgent and full cooperation in responding to Canberra's formal requests for additional personal protection and security.
Mr Smith says the new threat has also prompted his government to place tougher travel warnings on the country.
He has also restated that the Australian government won't be intimidated about its policy on Fiji.
Australia imposed sanctions on Fiji after the 2006 military coup and has been critical of the interim regime's decision to expel two Australian newspaper publishers this year.
