France may be asked to intervene in Tahiti assembly row

1:33 pm on 7 May 2008

The French Polynesian president, Gaston Tong Sang, is expected to ask the French high commissioner to open the territorial assembly after today's scheduled sitting failed to take place amid an opposition boycott .

The assembly president, Oscar Temaru of the opposition Union For Democracy, refused to open the sitting which meant there was no quorum of 29 members.

The government had 28 members present but its 29th member is on a visit to New Caledonia.

Mr Tong Sang submitted a list of questions to Mr Temaru in a bid to get the session started but according to local radio reports he has refused to give answers.

Under the new law governing the territory, the high commissioner, Anne Boquet, can step in in the absence of an assembly president.

Two weeks ago, the assembly failed to hold its first meeting since the change of government.

On that occasion, the opposition boycotted the assembly and the government had two members away.
