An outbreak of leptospirosis in New Caledonia has now spread to neighbouring Wallis and Futuna.

A biologist at the Wallis and Futuna health services, Jean-Francois Yvon, has told local television that Futuna island is the most affected with 33 of the 34 known cases.

New Caledonia has been on high alert status since early April as three people have died from the disease this year.
