More than 200 boarders of a leading state school in Fiji's north have been sent home because the institution cannot afford to feed them.

The Fijilive website reports that the 216 boarders of Labasa College, in Labasa, were sent home on Friday.

They have been told they would have to find their own places to live for the last week of this school term.

There are 86 female boarders and 130 male boarders who pay 70 Fiji dollars each per term.

A parent who lives in Savusavu and preferred not to be identified, says she was shocked to hear the news.

She says it is time the interim government increased the food budget for the school.
