Fiji hotel tax hike criticised

2:41 pm on 24 March 2008

The Fiji Islands Hotel and Tourism Association has spoken out against the way the Hotel Turnover Tax is charged.

The Association's President, Dixon Seeto, has told the Fiji Times that it's not fair that it only applies to food consumed in hotels and not restaurants.

Mr Seeto says the tax will be increased to five percent from next month, which he says the hotels will pass on to customers.

He says the interim government should instead have raised the Departure Tax.

Mr Seeto had earlier said the hotel tax increase will have an adverse effect on the anticipated 10 percent increase of tourist arrivals in 2008.
