Bill introduced to ban smoking in public in Northern Marianas

8:27 pm on 6 March 2008

A bill seeking to ban smoking in public places in the Northern Marianas islands will probably face opposition from the tourism industry.

The bill, sponsored by Representative Justo S. Quitugua, would ban smoking in restaurants, bars and many workplaces.

The President of the Saipan chamber of commerce, Jim Arenovski, says many businesses are concerned about the health of their employess.

But he says there are some that will put up a fight.

"I think some people will fight on the premise that our tourists from China Korea, Japan come from a smoking society, if you want to call it that. And I think that they will put up a reasonable fight for the people who service our tourism industry mostly."
