Women in Solomon Islands to benefit from fundraising

10:48 am on 23 February 2008

Women in Solomon Islands are one step closer to having access to modern equipment to detect and treat cervical and breast cancer.

In October last year the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands organised a dinner to raise funds for breast and cervical cancer treatment and detection.

RAMSI has this week given the donation of almost 23 000 US dollars to the the chair of the First Lady's Charity, Lady Alice Waena, at a small ceremony.

The National Council of Women's, Sarah Dyer, welcomes the donation and believes it will help many women who suffer from cancer.

Ms Dyer says they are planning a meeting with the First Lady's Charity to find the best way to use the money

"They still have to decide but in the not too distant future we will be coming together to decide how best the money could be spent, because, after all, we are there to see the things are available to women in Solomon Islands."

There are plans to make the fundraising dinner a yearly event.
