Hundreds homeless after PNG clash in Mt Hagen

4:14 pm on 5 February 2008

Hundreds of people remain homeless following ethnic violence in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands Province that left six dead.

The Police Commander Gari Baki has ordered 35 Port Moresby officers to fly to Mt Hagen to help restore law and order after a weekend hotel brawl triggered retaliation attacks in the city's settlements.

One of the six victims was killed in a drive-by shooting as Jiga tribesmen retaliated against Mt Hagen city settlers.

The surprise attack occurred after a security guard was stoned to death during an early morning fight at the Kanges Hotel in Mt Hagen.

Many homeless have been moved to a police gym.

Highlands men have been told to stay at home to avoid the risk of reprisal attacks.

The Post Courier reports that some community leaders have called on the government to declare a state of emergency.
