Samoa seeks Interpol help over counterfeit notes

5:03 pm on 1 February 2008

The police in Samoa have sought assistance from Interpol to help trace the producer or producers of counterfeit notes recently found circulating in the country.

The assistant police commissioner and spokesman, Papalii Li'o, says investigations so far have found no evidence of any operation to produce counterfeit notes.

He says police suspect the 50 and 100 tala counterfeit notes were produced overseas.

No other information has been released as investigations are continuing.

Some reports say a total of about 3,000 Samoan tala in counterfeit notes has been seized by the Central Bank.
