Several schools around the flood affected areas in Samoa's capital, Apia have delayed the start of the new school year because of the mud and debris left over from last week's flooding.

The delay affects private and public school which were due to start on Monday.

The Newsline newspaper says notices calling for parents to keep their children at home for the next few days have been aired on local radio.

Apia is still trying to dry up after prolonged weeks of torrential rain.

On Friday 108 millimetres of rain was recorded in a 12 hour period and stores, offices and homes in Pesega, Vaimoso, Fugalei, Togafu'afu'a, Saleufi and Taufusi were under water.
