The Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary in American Samoa says it's spectacular to be considered a World Heritage site.
The sanctuary is among 14 United States sites to be looked at for a UNESCO World Heritage Listing, which recognises the world's most important cultural and natural sites.
The sanctuary is a vibrant reef marine ecosystem.
Its education coordinator, Allamanda Amituanai says the listing would give the sanctuary the recognition it deserves.
"It is special because it's the smallest and most remote compared to all the other sanctuaries. It houses more than 300 species of coral reefs and even more of vertebrates and the other species of fishes that are hardly found in any other sanctuaries."
Allamanda Amituanai says the site has cultural and recreational importance for many American Samoans.
