Concerns grow about obesity among Samoan people

A United States government official is asking American Samoan government and community leaders to implement a plan that would lead to healthier living in the territory.

Samoa News reports that Dr. Saleia Afele-Faamuli says there is enough scientific data to show that Samoans are among the most obese peoples in the world.

Afele-Faamuli, a Samoan, oversees national science and education programmes for the United States Department of Agriculture.

She has been in American Samoa for nearly two weeks, attending meetings and promoting the plan with various government leaders.

The plan, named the Islandwide Strategic Planning and Performance Against Obesity for American Samoa, took several years to formulate.
