Solomons opposition leader says several politicians in race for PM

The Solomon Islands opposition leader Fred Fono says there are a number of possible nominees for the upcoming parliamentary election of the Prime Minister.

The parliament has been adjourned until next Thursday when MPs will choose a new Prime Minister before a government is officially formed.

This follows the ousting of the Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare in a vote of no-confidence in parliament yesterday.

The Governor General Sir Nathaniel Waena has advised that nominations for the next Prime Minister must be lodged by late tomorrow.

Mr Fono says that he won't mind if the opposition grouping won't name him as leader when the new government is to be formed next week.

"Otherwise I'll have to give way to one of the defected ministers that comes with the group to consolidate our group and just go for one candidate. We have three former Prime Ministers, three former deputy Prime Ministers, and a number of others who have the potential to become Prime Minister."
