Solomons opposition loses another MP to cabinet posting

8:28 pm on 28 November 2007

A second Solomon Islands opposition MP has defected to the government of Manasseh Sogavare in as many days.

The Member of Parliament for East Guadalcanal, Johnson Koli, was no Wednesday sworn in as the new Minister of Communication, Aviation and Meteorology.

The previous day Peter Boyers was sworn in as new Finance minister in a surprise defection of a stern critic of Prime Minister Sogavare.

Mr Koli is the latest member of the Parliamentary Opposition to join the Government following the mass resignation from the government of eight ministers and at least one back-bencher earlier this month.

The opposition claims to have the support of 24 MPs out of a total 48 held seats in parliament.

But the government has gone to court to challenge Governor-General Sir Nathaniel Waena's decision to recall parliament on December 13 so Mr Sogavare can face a vote of no-confidence.
