Fiji's DPP denies police made threats

4:27 pm on 9 November 2007

The office of Fiji's Director of Public Prosecution has denied that it issued a statement to say its lawyers were being threatened by police officers.

Fijilive reports that a fax containing the official letterhead of the office was distributed to media outlets yesterday, saying the DPP's office viewed the threats as a direct attack on its independence.

But shortly afterwards, a statement purportedly from DPP Josaia Naigulevu and without a letterhead, denied that it authorised the release of the earlier statement.

The Police Commissioner, Commodore Esala Teleni, says he met Mr Naigulevu yesterday and their relationship was fine.
