The state-owned Fiji Electricity Authority has embarked on an ambitious plan to generate electricity from alternative sources and reduce its dependence on expensive diesel fuel.
The Authority opened a wind powered power plant at Butoni near Sigatoka last weekend, which is expected to save almost 2-million US dollars in diesel costs a year.
The authority is also building another hydro power plant at Nadarivatu which will generate 40 megawatts of power by 2010.
A woodchip powered power plant in Lautoka is expected to generate
9-megawatts when completed in 2009.
The chief executive of the Electricity Authority, Rokoseru Nabalarua, says Fiji has the resources to be self sufficient in its energy needs and they only require to be harnessed.
