The New Caledonian Union of Kanak and Exploited Workers, or USTKE, is today again striking at the territory's only cement plant to demand better wages and working conditions.
This is the union's second so-called general strike at the Holcim cement factory this month.
USTKE's Pierre Chauvat says while working conditions are bad for most workers, Holcim employees are the worst off.
"We are just concentrating on the industrial part of the town located at the Holcim cement plant. [We are] just sitting there, having an assembly, having speeches to resume the social situation in the country, which is really bad at the moment."
Pierre Chauvat says the strike will end tonight.
