11:34 am on 1 October 2007

An American attorney with nearly 30 years of legal experience in the Marshall Islands has been named to replace a departing Australian judge.

The Marshall Islands parliament approved the appointment of James Plasman, currently the chairman of the Nuclear Claims Tribunal in Majuro, just prior to adjourning at the end of last week for an upcoming national election.

Mr Plasman first came to the Marshall Islands in 1979 as the U.S. Trust

Territory government¹s public defender.

Since then, he has lived in the country on and off as he served in temporary positions with the High Court and the Supreme Court, as well as his more recent chairmanship of the Tribunal.
