Nearly 800 public school administrators, teachers and support staff in the Northern
Marianas may not receive their paychecks through to the end of the current fiscal period.
The Marianas Variety newspaper reports that 797 locally-funded employees are facing "payless paydays" because the commonwealth administration has not restored money that was included in the fiscal year 2007 budget which ends on September 30th.
This includes $2 million that was reallocated in the last fiscal year to cover a budget shortfall, and another $2 million in U.S.-provided "impact aid" related to immigrants from the Micronesian region in the public school system.
The public school system employs almost 12 hundred personnel and 797 are paid by these funding sources.
The rest are paid with U.S. federal funds.
