New approaches to micro financing in Pacific discussed in PNG

Efforts are underway in Port Moresby in PNG to look at new approaches to micro credit financing in the Pacific.

A conference there , an initiative of the Microfinance Pasifika Network, will focus on improving access to financial services for those outside the conventional banking system.

One of the parties involved is the IFC, a branch of the World Bank.

And an IFC official, Brigit Helms, says they will discuss how to cut the cost of finance transactions for rural Pacific peoples.

She says this may be as simple as giving them the means to access banking services by mobile phone.

"For instance, if you are a factory worker or someone who works in a government employ to be able to get your salary and an electronic wallet on your mobile phone and then use that electronic money to either buy things in your village or get cash from a local store or send it to your mother who lives in the next town."
