Fiji's military has promoted several senior officers, including its deputy commander, navy Captain Esala Teleni to Commodore.

Commodore Teleni is the new commissioner of police but he remains deputy military commander for the present.

The former Land Force commander and now commissioner of prisons, Col Iowane Naivalurua, has been promoted to Brigadier.

Naval officer Lt Commander Sanaila Naqali, who is the acting director of fisheries charged with weeding out corruption in the department, has been promoted to Commander.

Lt Col Samuela Saumatua has also been promoted to full Colonel following his appointment as chief of staff at the military's strategic headquarters.

The interim prime minister and military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, says although he and Commodore Teleni now hold the same rank, he is still the commander.
