Solomons groups accept PM's offer to discuss top job appointments

Civil society groups in Solomon Islands have decided to accept an invitation from the prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, to discuss issues they are concerned about.

The groups are opposed to the appointment of Jahir Khan of Fiji as the new police commissioner who started his job this week, and Australian Julian Moti as attorney general.

A spokesperson for Transparency Solomon Islands, Joses Tuhanuku, says the groups decided to meet Mr Sogavare to discuss the appointments.

"We requested to have an audience with the prime minister and a few of his ministers either tomorrow or on Wednesday. But we haven't heard yet back from them."

Joses Tuhanuku says he hopes the meeting will take place today or Wednesday.

Mr Tuhanuku says if negotiations fail, they will organise a march to protest against the appointment.
