Fiji's new Telecom tariffs deferred

Fiji's Commerce Commission has been forced to defer its June 1st deadline to announce new, reduced telecom tariffs.

The Commission chairman, Thomas Raju, says the three carriers, Vodaphone Fiji, Telecom Fiji and FINTEL are not agreeing to the determination on the wholesale prices charged between the three for various services.

The Fiji Times quotes Mr Raju as saying he cannot give a timeline for when the new charges would be announced.

Despite a round of reductions announced by the Commerce Commission in October last year, Fiji's telecom charges remain among the highest in the world.

Meanwhile, talks have begun between the government and the same three companies to give up their monopoly telecom licences.

The government wants to deregulate the market and the talks are centered on monetary compensation to be paid to the three companies.
