4:16 am on 22 May 2007

A public holiday has been declared in Vanuatu today following the sudden death of the Catholic Bishop Michel Visi on Sunday morning.

Bishop Visi, who was 52, died in his sleep and will be buried today.

Our correspondent Len Garae says the country is in shock.

"He was orginally from the island of Ambae, and he became Bishop of the Catholic church in Vanuatu ten years ago, and since then he's been made chairman of the Vanuatu Christian Council which is a very prominent position, and then the country was shocked."
