People living in Fiji's north are being warned to take precautions as a tropical cyclone is due to pass over the region in the next 24 hours.

An alert for tropical cyclone Cliff is now in force and a flash flood warning has been issued for the eastern parts of Vanua Levu, including the towns of Labasa and Savusavu, Taveuni and the northern Lau group

Labasa police Sergeant Vishwa Goundar says they have dispatched warnings over the district for people to prepare for Cyclone Cliff

"We are on alert. We have advised people, those staying in low lying areas to go up to the higher grounds and secure their properties first before they move out from their house; and to take precautions because it might strike at night time."

Sergeant Vishwa Goundar says if people in Labasa need to move to a more secure building, they can regroup to the town council, the civic centre or schools around the town area.
