Niue to extend visas of indebted group

3:16 pm on 2 April 2007

The Niue government intends extending the visas of a group of people which owes hundreds of thousands of dollars around the island.

The group, which has been on the island for more than a year, has run up a hotel bill estimated by the immigration minister, Fisa Pihigia, at about 250,000 US dollars.

No payment has been made on the bill since August last year, but the group continues to occupy rooms at the hotel.

The group, which has refused to speak to the media, has made overtures to the government about investment on the island.

Mr Pihigia says he is very concerned about the debts and he is waiting for legal advice on what can be done to ensure the money is eventually paid.
