Small wave hits Honiara in Solomons after strong earthquake

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says a 14 centimetre wave has been generated by the earthquake that hit the Solomons at 7.30 am local time.

The quake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale and the wave is reported to have washed up on the capital, Honiara..

The Centre says a warning is still in place, but the threat of a large scale tsunami has diminished.

Some damage to property has been reported from the township of Gizo on New Georgia
