The Commonwealth Games shotput gold medallist and world number two Valeri Vili says she's looking foward to competing at the IAAF Track and Field Permit meeting in Christchurch tonight.

The Tongan New Zealand athlete says her training's been going well since she had an operation on a minor shoulder injury in December.

But Vili says it's good that points earned from tonight's competition will count towards the World athletics final in Stuttgart in September.

"This is the first time with an international grand prix that we can earn points and it's done in a proper way and there's hotels and there's shuttles going to and from and all that sort of stuff so realy really happy that it is happening here in New Zealand and down in Christchurch. Christchurch is one of my best places I like competing in."
