Fiji police have established a new unit to replace the Tactical Response Unit set up by the former commissioner, Andrew Hughes.

The military disarmed the Tactical Response Unit at the time of the December takeover and it was disbanded last month.

Its replacement, known as the National Operations Support Unit, will not be armed in the early stages.

The acting police commissioner, Romanu Tikotikoca, says the role of the new unit will be to support police divisions and formations requiring additional manpower resources for major events.

Mr Tikotikoca has also thanked the military for helping to reduce crime since the December takeover but says police will continue to play the lead role in law enforcement and investigations.
