Tobacco companies selling products in Hawaii will start to feel the effects of a new anti smoking law that takes effect from tomorrow.
Hawaii is the 14th state to enact an anti smoking law, joining an international movement to protect people from serious health effects of secondhand smoke exposure.
The new law prohibits smoking in public places, such as bars, nightclubs, shopping malls, airports, restaurants and enclosed workplaces.
Individuals who flout the law can expect to be fined, and businesses with liquor licenses and food service may have their permits suspended or revoked.
The Honolulu Star reports the legislature has also raised the cigarette tax to 20 cents per pack each year for the next 5 years.
