Commonwealth Secretary-General arrives in Vanuatu for two-day visit

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Don McKinnon, arrives ,in Vanuatu today for a two-day visit as part of his Pacific tour that covers Fiji and Solomon Islands.

Mr McKinnon is expected to call on President Kalkot Mataskelekele, the Prime Minister, Ham Lini, and other ministers.

Discussion during the visit are likely to focus on Commonwealth issues as wel as the Pacific Plan launched by the Pacific Islands Forum leaders in 2005.

The Commonwealth is working closely with the Forum Secretariat in Fiji, to contribute to the implementation of the Pacific Plan aimed at enhancing social development and regional economic integration.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is working towards the launch of a major new programme of assistance to strengthen governance in the region as a contribution to the Pacific Plan.
