Solomons firm on expulsion of Australian high commissioner

2:07 pm on 13 September 2006

The Solomon Islands government is standing by its decision to declare Australia's High Commissioner, Patrick Cole, persona non grata, which will lead to him being expelled from the country.

It follows allegations that he'd been meddling in internal politics by raising concerns about the government's commission of inquiry into the riots and for speaking to the opposition.

Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, has called the decision outrageous.

The Solomon Islands Planning Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, says the government wants a new high commissioner, not Mr Cole.

"This particular diplomat, since the inauguration of this government, we have observed his performance and behaviour as a diplomat in this country. And, we have reason to believe that he has been actively involved in politics. That much we can give to you but unfortunately I cannot dwell on the details of it."

Meanwhile, the opposition leader, Fred Fono, says it's a mistake to expel Mr Cole.

It's very much regrettable that the prime minister has taken that decision to expel him and ask his recall back to Canberra. I believe since his posting here, Australian development assistance has increased considerably.

A senior envoy has been sent from Australia to Honiara to hold talks with the prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare.

He is expected to deliver a stern warning over the ousting.
