PNG's Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, says his government will support Venezuela in its bid to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations security council.

Latin American and Caribbean nations have nominated Venezuela as their candidate for the 2007-2008 term on the council.

The election will be held at the 61st session of the UN general assembly later this month.

Sir Michael has told Venezuela's special envoy that he is happy with the objectives Venezuela wished to pursue in the security council.

He said he looked forward to meeting Venezuela's President, Hugo Chavez, at the Non-Aligned Movement Meeting in Cuba to explore opportunities for further cooperation between the two countries.
