The European Commission has announced a 6.6 million US dollar project on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy based in New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna.

Pacnews reports that the three year project will see wind or solar equipment installed in several villages in the Northern Province of New Caledonia and in French Polynesia

Pumps would be installed on the island of Futuna, and electric installations on the island of Wallis.

A statement from the Commission says the project is part of a proposed strategy for a stronger partnership with the Pacific region which will strengthen political dialogue and focus development cooperation on sustainable management of natural resources.

The Commission says the project will also contribute to the strengthening of regional cooperation both between the French territories and between other Pacific islands.
