Samoan village matai reject court instruction to lift ban on politician

The mayor of the Samoan village of Lano has refused to obey a court order to lift the banning of unsuccessful election candidate Su'a Rimoni Ah Chong.

The Pulenu'u, Malae'ulu Amoni, was ordered to call other village matais to lift Su'a's banning or go to jail for contempt of court.

The Samoa Supreme Court ordered Lano matai to remove the ostracism of Su'a by Tuesday 15 August, but Malaeulu has vowed not to lift the ban.

Another Lano matai has told the Samoa Observer newspaper that most of the constituency and villages oppose the court order.
