French Polynesian MP says political plot in illegal blockades

3:57 pm on 19 June 2006

A government MP in French Polynesia, Tea Hirshon, says the latest blockades in Papeete have been part of a plot to undermine the government.

Ms Hirshon says the last week's illegal port blockade had no justification, contradicting an opposition-affiliated union leader who claimed that worker deployment agreements had been violated.

"There's is a strong movement to break this government up and put up a new one and very strong pressure, more so because there French elections are next year. And we can see that anything that can be done to destabilise the government will be done."

Port workers following instructions given by the former boss of the GIP intervention force are reported to now block other staff from a key building in the Papeete port area.
