Pita Nacuva is Fiji's new speaker

The former Fiji tourism minister, Pita Nacuva, has been appointed the new Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Mr Nacuva's name was moved by the ruling SDL party and seconded by Bernadette Rounds Ganilau from the opposition.

Mr Nacuva, who lost last month's general election in the Samabula / Tamavua Open seat, is a former ambassador to the United States and played in the national rugby team.

He has pledged to the run the House of Representatives for the good of the nation.
